Liberals commit $70,000 for Glenorchy Basketball Association upgrades

A re-elected Morrison Government will commit $70,000 for the Glenorchy Basketball Association (GBA) for much needed facility upgrades.

Federal Minister for Sport, Richard Colbeck, and Liberal Candidate for Clark, Will Coats, said the funding would enable the GBA to continue to offer Tasmanians of all ages and abilities the chance to play the game.

“With almost 1,000 registered players across junior and senior competitions, the Glenorchy Basketball Association is one of the largest social sports clubs in Tasmania,” Mr Coats said.

“Following the phenomenal first season performance of the Tasmanian Jackjumpers, the GBA is expecting an influx of new players looking to take to the court.

“The GBA currently uses both the Claremont College Gymnasium and the Moonah Sports Stadium for Sunday competitions.

“Our commitment will support upgrade works at both stadiums to ensure facilities continue to meet growing membership demand.”

The Liberals’ $70,000 commitment includes:

$65,000 for minor infrastructure works at the Claremont College Gymnasium including the creation of administration centre for the growing GBA.

$5,000 to convert a former change room into a storage equipment area at the Moonah Sports Stadium so volunteers don’t have to store equipment at their own homes.

Minister Colbeck said the GBA was an important part of the northern suburbs’ sports environment.

“The GBA has members and participants from all walks of life and is really proud of its welcoming environment where everyone can take part,” Minister Colbeck said.

“This community commitment was evident when the GBA received the National Good Sports award recently for not just promoting basketball for all, but also raising money to help struggling families participate in the sport.

“Our investment in the GBA is recognition of the efforts by the GBA and its many hard-working volunteers.

Only the Liberals have a plan to deliver a strong economy and a stronger future for residents of Clark.
